“Boy, you’ve come a long way.”
If you were to ask us, we saw no difference between the 49-year-old Arnel Pineda – the lead singer of the international band, Journey from the five-year-old Arnel he told us about.
What didn’t change over 40 years? The passion for music.
Arnel was just like all of us; a five-year-old kid who had a dream. But of course, no dream can be made without the struggles and obstacles. Which is why even Arnel couldn’t believe that he was chosen to be Journey’s lead singer.
“It felt so surreal na imagine isang iconic na rock and roll band from America would hire someone like me,” Arnel said in an exclusive video with Canto Philippines.
(“It felt so unreal. Imagine, a rock and roll band from America would hire someone like me.”)
The singer recalled his emotions fighting dominance the minute he found out that he would be leading an award winning international band.
“Here I consider myself a nobody, who will just remain a cover singer for rock,” he said. At the same time, parang wow, I saw an opportunity there to express myself.”
But one thing is for sure, Arnel is happy where he is as becoming a singer was his lifelong dream since he was five. “All I could hear lang even at school is yung melody ng mga kanta.”
(“All I could here even at school is the melody of the songs.”)
It was his passion that kept Arnel going. At the age of 15, he was able to join a band called “Ijos” to be a substitute singer. And that’s where everything began.
After a few covers of Joureny, Aerosmith, Air Supply, and other songs; In 2007, Neal Schon of Journey got in touch with Arnel and December that same year, Arnel became the band’s lead vocalist.
The past 10 years have been a wonderful Journey for Arnel Pineda. But now that his dreams have come true, what’s next for him?
“Ito lang, gumawa nang gumawa ng songs, write as much as I can hangga’t kaya ko and then at the same time, to live a good life with my family and to pursue my foundation,” he said.
(“Just this. To write songs as much as I can. And at the same time, to live a good life with my family and pursue my foundation.”)
In fact, he has a new music video coming out for his song “Owe” which was inspired by his wife, Cherry. The song depicts being fully loved by someone despite one’s imperfections.
“Gusto kong gisingin yung mind nila, yung heart nila, na “okay, you have to do better” para naman syempre deserve ng nagmamahal sa’yo diba na mas maging better person ka for her,” he added.
(“I want them to do better so that they will deserve the love they will receive, to be a better person for her.”)
Arnel wants people to become a better person towards their loved ones.
The singer – songwriter has his hands full lately as he is set to launch his advocacy project that aims to help aspiring Filipino bands and artists.
It looks like 2017 will be a great year for Arnel Pineda. And while we wait for him to slay his career once again, listen to his song “Owe” and get ready to say AWWWWW.
