December 13 is a special date for Swifties, because it’s Taylor Swift’s birthday!
*cues Happy Birthday song*
And because of this, we should celebrate her birthday by giving you her top 10 underrated songs. These songs are definitely good, but for some reason have not become wide-known hits.
All Too Well
This song reminisces about her past relationship. From the album Red, All Too Well is a song rumored to be written about Jake Gyllenhall, with whom she had a relationship with in 2010.
Best Lyrics: After plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own/Now you mail back my things and I walk home alone
From her latest album 1989, This Love explains that regardless of love being good or bad, well, it’s still love. This is also the only that was solely by Tay-Tay.
Best Lyrics: When you’re young you just run/But you come back to what you need
‘Cause we couldn’t find a video on Youtube, we give you this amazing cover by Nicholas Connell:
This song, as explained by Taylor in an interview, is about the feeling of finally appreciating “a past relationship for what it was, rather than being bitter about what it didn’t end up being.”
Best Lyrics: But sometimes I wonder how you think about it now/And I see your face in every crowd
From the album Speak Now, Enchanted is about Tay’s infatuation with Adam Young (more known as Owl City). They were corresponding before through e-mail. Her use of the word ‘wonderstruck’ is intentional, because the word was used during one of their conversations.
Best Lyrics: This is me praying that/This was the very first page/Not where the storyline ends/My thoughts will echo your name/Until I see you again
Another song from 1989, Clean is about finally moving on from a hurtful and exhausting relationship. In an interview for Elle Magazine, Taylor explained that she wrote the song when she was in London, and that someone she used to date was in the same city as her and she didn’t think of him at all.
Best Lyrics: And by morning, gone was any trace of you/And I think I am finally clean
A cover of Clean by Travis Atreo:
Haunted, from Speak Now, is about watching the one you love slowly drift away and fall out of love with you. Ow.
Best Lyric: Stood there and watched you walk away/From everything we had/But I still mean every word I said to you
Tay co-wrote this song with Colbie Caillat. This is about saying goodbye to someone.
Best Lyrics: And we know it’s never simple, never easy/Never a clean break, no one here to/Save me/You’re the only thing I know like the back of my hand
I Almost Do
Do you sometimes get that feeling that you’re tempted to call up your ex and see how he’s doing, and maybe get back together? Well, I Almost Do is about that.
Best Lyrics: I bet it never, ever occurred to you that I can’t say hello to you/And risk another goodbye
Stay Stay Stay
This song is one of the happier songs in Taylor’s repertoire. From the album Red, Stay Stay Stay chronicles the happy resolution of a couple’s fight, deciding to stay together and work it out instead of breaking up.
Best Lyrics: All those times that you didn’t leave it’s been occurring to me/I would like to hang out with you for my whole life
This last song is Tay-Tay’s song about her breakup with Joe Jonas. Last Kiss explores the memories of their relationship, and how Taylor never expected it to end.
Best Lyrics: But now I’ll go sit on the floor/Wearing your clothes/All that I know is/I don’t know how to be something you miss
There you go! Again, happy birthday, Taylor Swift!
