Sometimes, you just need to find a good place coupled with good company to find balance after a tough week at work. For a very long time, my friends and I have been looking for a place to unwind and chase those blues away. I, then, suddenly remembered this Instagram-worthy cafe that I’ve always wanted to visit.
And so, one recent Saturday night, my friends and I decided to have a Saturday “girls night out,” as well as a late celebration for my birthday. Since it was my treat, I was the one who made the reservation at this cafe inside the upscale S’Maison mall at the Mall of Asia complex. Surprisingly when we got there, it was not as crowded as I expected. I was thrilled to enter the place because it reminded me of something that gives an old-fashioned, punk, and classic vibe.
Black Sheep Coffee and Cocktails originated in London. It’s amazing that every corner of this bar was worthy of posting on your Instagram feed. But what I love about this coffee shop is that turns into a cocktail bar at night. But no need to worry, coffee lovers, because you can order your favorite coffee even when the sun has set.
As we entered, no one gave us a menu, which is the typical set-up in a restaurant. They had counters to place orders, then the servers bring the food to the tables. While waiting, the servers brought us some popcorn – free and refillable! But wait, there’s more. They also gave all three of us free soda.
The place has the feel of the neon-diner from Riverdale, Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe. It was perfect for having that Veronica Lodge or Betty Cooper moment.
Diners may choose from pastries, pizza, pasta, waffles, cakes, platters and nuts. In our case, we went for pasta. I saw on the counter the display picture of pomodoro and shrimp scampi pasta, but they recommended us to try puttanesca pasta instead (Php300). Since we were really interested in the shrimp scampi (Php300), one friend ordered it for us. We also added black sheep wings (Php390) comprising of 12 pieces.
After 20-25 minutes of waiting, I was surprised that their servings are for sharing up to 2 persons. I did not even finish half of the bowl as it already made me full.
As the night was still young, we ordered McGuigan-Moscato, the bestseller of their wines (Php1,600). While it’s a little bit pricey, it was still worth trying, especially since we haven’t hung out for a year. On the other hand, they have cocktails and beers to try if wine is not your choice. If you don’t have the means, but still want to have some booze, you can try their liquor by the glass or shot. If you’re like me who’s not familiar with what to choose, you can ask their barista for recommendations.
I find it nice that you can even go there by yourself. There’s a magic man roaming around to entertain you with his magic tricks and gives his card as a souvenir – a service you can’t find anywhere else.
But with the pros come the cons. I find their comfort room a little bit dark and their WiFi is not working though I understand that maybe they do not want to mess with the vibe.
Will I come back? Is it worth a try? Definitely yes! I actually want to try their pizza and platter the next time around. You may need a big budget, but if you want a quiet, chill yet extravagant place, you can always consider this cafe-cum-bar, particularly for your own special occasions.
Overall, I love how me and my friends enjoyed staying until midnight because of our non-stop chikahan. I love their recommended wine and their approachable waiters, who were willing to take our picture several times and ask for feedback or suggestions about their food etc.
And oh, their magic man and their unlimited popcorn stood out in my memory.
