Twelve senate seats are now up for grabs in the upcoming elections. Some are looking to keep their post, while some are looking to join the Senate body for the first time.
The Senate is now in the Second Session of the 17th Congress of the Philippines. Do you know how many bills have been filed?
According to data from the Senate website, there were 1, 843 senate bills filed during the second session. Fifteen of those senate bills have been signed into law.
Before we cast our votes, let’s look at the re-electionists’ performance in the Senate in the first three years of their term.
Senator JV Ejercito
Senator Ejercito has a total of 258 bills and resolutions filed at the end of the second session. These include the Public Utility Motorcycles Act of 2019; Emergency Volunteer Act of 2019; and the Rationalization of Wage Level on a National of Industrial Basis Act. Six of his filed bills are awaiting the signature of the president.
Senator Bam Aquino
Data from 2018 show that Senator Bam Aquino filed 256 bills and resolutions in the Senate. Some of these were passed into law including the Philippine Identification System Act; the Go Negosyo Act, and the Anti-Discrimination Act. As of 2016, Aquino has had 35 bills passed into law.
Senator Grace Poe
After running for president in the 2016 elections, Poe is now vying to extend her stay in the senate for this year’s elections. At the end of the second session of the 17th Congress, Senator Poe has filed 249 bills and resolutions. Some were passed into law including the Anti – Political Dynasty Act of 2018; the Elder Assistance Act of 2018; and the National Commission of Senior Citizens Act. Thirteen of Poe’s bills are already signed into law.
Senator Sonny Angara
Angara has filed 222 bills and resolutions under his name. Some of those that were passed into law include the Council for the Welfare of Senior Citizens Act; the Disaster Resilience Act of 2018; and the recently signed Universal Health Care Act. As of 2016, Angara has had 176 bills signed into law, 99 of which he was the main sponsor.
Senator Nancy Binay
The daughter of former Vice-president Jejomar Binay has filed 199 bills and resolutions. Some of these were passed into law including the Internet Safety Education Act; the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act, and the Increasing the Monthly Minimum Wage of Public School Teachers Act. Throughout her stay in the senate, Binay has had 11 bills signed into law.
