Another storm has struck in Manila yet again. Only this time, it’s the storm full of Henry Cavill’s charm and charisma.
Filipino fans were wild as they gathered around the Activity Center of Ayala Malls Manila Bay on Thursday, December 12, to meet the actor behind Zack Snyder’s Superman and Netflix’s The Witcher.
Henry Cavill, together with The Witcher’s showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, flew all the way from Sao Paolo, Brazil for the premiere of the said Netflix show on December 20, 2019.
A mix of fandoms crowded the Activity Center — fans of Superman, The Witcher, and Henry Cavill. All of them had three goals in common — to meet Henry Cavill, get his autograph, and take a selfie with him.
As Cavill is globally known for the role of DC Extended Universe’s Superman, not only The Witcher fans were there to enjoy the fan event brought to them by Netflix, but a lot of DC and Superman fans were there, as well, to savor a moment with their one and only Man of Steel.
One of them is Erwin Ugawa. He identifies himself as a solid Superman fan. He even brought a huge poster of the film Man of Steel (2013) for Henry Cavill to sign.
“Of course, I’m a big fan of Superman, ‘di ba? So since 80s, paborito na nating lahat ‘yan. Ngayon, in person, makikita natin ‘yung gumanap sa movie. It’s a once in a lifetime event so dapat makita natin siya today,” said Erwin.
Like most of the fan event’s attendees, Erwin also went to the venue early to secure his spot near the stage. He’s just one of the many fans of Superman and Geralt of Rivia who went to fall in line at the earliest hour, before even the mall’s opening schedule.
When Erwin was asked if he’s also there to support Henry Cavill’s journey as Geralt, he said:
“Super mahilig ako sa fantasy and watching Netflix. I’m sure this will be another feather on his cap so magiging successful ‘to, for sure. Ang ganda ng visuals at storyline. Perfect project for Henry.”
Fans like Erwin is the reason why Henry Cavill continues pushing his limits further. Despite the long barricades surrounding the whole venue, Cavill still took the time to make rounds at every corner of the mall’s Activity Center so to grant the wish of his fans of meeting him.
All eyes were on Cavill as he made his way through the crowd. He kept looking and smiling (more like smirking) in front of the camera that his fans, especially the women, can’t help but swoon over this man.
Even Matteo Guidicelli, the host of #TheWitcherInManila event, can also vouch for Cavill’s “godly” physical features. Amazingly, a lot of straight men in the crowd have also commented the same. Toxic masculinity, who?
Finally, when Henry Cavill was done with all the corners of the venue, he then went upstage and had a mini-interview session with Matteo Guidicelli. It almost felt like an intimate event as the stage was also set up like a talk show.
When asked about how feels about the role, Henry Cavill’s answer only proves how worthy he is to play the role of Geralt of Rivia.
“To be honest, I’ve been preparing for this my entire life. I’ve been a fan of the fantasy genres since I was a boy and I’ve been reading fantasy books since I was three. Before that, my father would read fantasy books to me and I’ve been a PC gamer since I was a boy, as well. [Haha, that’s the stuff]. Yes, I’ve been playing all games of the fantasy genre for years and years and years so this was just a final upgrade.”
From reading the books as a child to playing the video games, it is indeed an upgrade for Henry Cavill for he’s now The Witcher.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Cavill. “As soon as I heard Netflix [planning to set casting] for the show, I was on my agents every single day saying, ‘Guys, you gotta get me in the room. I don’t care how you do it. At least, I want to meet someone who can say yes or no to me. That’s all I care about. I just wanted to know. I wanted [to show] my best performance and see what I can do to help.”
He also talked about the politics, sexism, and xenophobia that the show will be tackling. Guidicelli also asked Cavill about Roach, the horse that Geralt uses as his company in his journey as the Witcher.
“Roach for Geralt is his true companion. It’s his connection to the world. Roach is much the same way as my dog Kal,” said Cavill. Guidicelli and Cavill even exchanged a short talk about their dogs, which are both Akitas.
Cavill was also asked to think of three words that best describe The Witcher series, which took him a few seconds to come up with: Fantasy, Murder, and Love.
He also invited the audience to support the show and even hinted about the future seasons of The Witcher.
“We have worked so very hard on creating this show, and keeping it faithful, and making it something which is hopefully going to entertain you for years and years to come,” said Cavill.
After that mini-interview session, Matteo Guidicelli asked Henry Cavill to take a group photo with everyone in the crowd. He even taught Henry some Filipino words that got everyone screaming after a while: “Mahal ko kayo.”
The event finale made it even more special as the Philippines was chosen to be the first country to witness the final trailer of the series. It sure is an exciting show and the final trailer gives a promising overview of the first season.
To make the whole fan experience a lot better, Netflix also gave fans free tickets for the season premiere of The Witcher. Popcorn and drinks were also free! What better way to be a fan of The Witcher?
Before the show even started, Lauren and Henry gave a little speech so to formally begin the free screening. Fans were still hyped about Henry’s visit in the Philippines that some were jokingly screaming “Marry me!” and “I love you!” to him inside the cinema. Fortunately, Henry Cavill is not a snob that he only kept responding “I love you, too” to them.
His little speech before the screening only proved even more that he has a kind heart and that he acknowledges his fellow workers in the show, not only the cast members and the producers.
“This is a very exciting moment for Lauren and myself. Even though we are the ones here on stage, it’s not just us who put in hours and hours of hard work. It is a crew and cast of 300 plus people. We wish could have them here, but we can’t. But when you’re watching this, remember that they bled, and they scried, and sweat, for your entertainment. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we enjoy making it.”
It was a fun fan event, indeed. The season premiere left fans with the feeling of wanting more. Unfortunately, everyone can only get to see the next episode on its official premiere date on Netflix.
