This year is unlike any other. That much we’ve established.
One way it’s different is in our celebrations. While I don’t think Halloween is that big of a deal here in the Philippines, I’m sure there are still people who enjoy its festivities. But because of the pandemic, the village trick-or-treat events or halloween parties with your friends will have to be cancelled.
That doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the spooky season, though. Here’s a list of things you can do to have fun on Halloween, whether you’re alone or with a group of people, even when you’re stuck at home:
Everyone knows you don’t need a special occasion or an excuse to use Netflix Party but what better reason to use the online extension than a marathon of your favorite horror movies! That way, you won’t have to hide behind a pillow by yourself 一 your funny friend’s commentary will be enough to keep you calm (and even laughing) during the scariest of scenes. Unless, of course, you’re hoping to get frightened out of your seat.
If what you wanna watch isn’t on Netflix, that’s totally fine. You’ve got other ways to watch things together: Zoom, Discord, and similar platforms will let you do this. Share screen, anyone?
If you’re unsure what to watch, here are some recommendations:
- Are You Afraid of the Dark? (the whole thing is on YouTube)
- The Haunting series, which is more sad than scary
- The Shining, because it’s a classic
- One Cut of the Dead for a little fun
- Get Out (Get it? Because you can’t get out of your house.)
Feel free to watch these by yourself, too, if you’re into that!
If you’ve been online for the past few weeks, months even, you probably already know what Among Us is. If you don’t, it’s basically the Mafia game but on your phone or on Steam (but you have to pay for that). The game is set in a spaceship where everyone is a crewmate but there’s at least one impostor on the ship that tries to kill the rest. While the impostor does that, crewmates have to fulfill their tasks on the ship so everyone can stay alive.
While it isn’t exactly “scary,” there’s always that internal panic of getting killed or getting booted out of the spaceship, depending on your role in the game. There are also cute Halloween-ish hats your character can wear.
It’s a lot of fun, and based on experience, it’s even more fun when you’re on call with your friends.
There are other similar games you can play like We Went Back, which is also set in a spaceship, and is free on Steam (but not multiplayer), or Deceit, which is another free Steam game that involves impostors.
A good, ol’ e-numan
Not in the mood for movies or games? No problem.
Having a catch up session with your friends while you’re preferably all in costume (or else it wouldn’t really be Halloween, now would it? And enjoying some drinks is more than enough to have a good time.
Try to put a spin on it if you want for a little extra flavor: have a theme! Maybe you can only dress up as characters from Filipino horror movies, or everyone has to have Halloween-themed food with them.
Whatever you choose to do this Halloween, remember: the most important thing you can do is enjoy yourself. Have some candies, dress up any way you want, and have fun!
